"On Martin Luther King Holiday this year, Friends of Sullivan and Sullivan High School hosted our 5th Annual MLK Middle School Basketball Tournament.

Tournament organizer Norman Polk and RPBG president Mike GlasserFor the third year in a row, the Rogers Park Builders Group sponsored and fully funded this day-long, double elimination tournament, won by James Blaine Elementary, with a hard-fought victory over second place Ravenswood Elementary.

Thanks to tournament coordinator Norman Polk and his sons - for overseeing and implementing so many important details. The refs did outstanding work - and as a result of Norman’s efforts, we were able to draw 12 schools - all CPS (no club teams) and completed this double-elimination tournament on schedule.

Action in Ravenswood vs Peirce matchTwelve schools participated, including four from Rogers Park. “How thrilling to see 120 young men compete on their day off. Middle school students benefit so greatly engaging in intense competition. This is always a great event!‘ exclaimed Friends of Sullivan Board member (and alum) Chuck Rosenberg (Class of ’72.)

Among the highlights: Four Sullivan High School athletes speaking with the kids during lunch break sessions, explaining what it takes to compete as a high school athlete. All boys were attentively listening and learning.

In addition to the RPBG contribution, twelve local real estate companies each sponsored one of the twelve competing schools - many on hand to cheer on their team and be photographed with them.

Among the spectators at this year's tournament was Rogers Park resident and writer Christa Veibel, who shared with us the following conversation she had with one of the player's mom:

"One player’s mom, Ana, sat next to me as we watched the action on the court and off. The parent coach holding a clipboard, with his other hand on his son’s shoulder. Young siblings dancing on the edge of the court. We heard the whistles, sneakers pounding and squeaking on the wood floor, balls dribbling, animated chatter of fans in the bleachers.

"Minds on the game, the players make themselves at home in the Sullivan gym.

"Ana is a fan of her son and his love for his junior high basketball team. So what position does Diego play? Ana laughs. 'Don’t ask me! I don’t know! But he’s watching the stands to make sure I’m here.'

"Diego loves the team and the game. After he started playing, Diego grew his confidence 'so much,' Ana says. His studies and vocabulary are improving. He’s performing better academically. 'He used to have trouble speaking up for himself and asking for help,' Ana tells me. 'Basketball has made his life as a student better. And his close friendships on the team mean so much,' his mother says.

"According to Ana, Diego 'enjoys it, win or lose.' His best friend is on the team. Most of the kids have known each other since kindergarten. They’re making lots of memories. 'After this year, they’re going in different directions. It’s very emotional,' Ana reflects.

"On this bitterly cold MLK Day, Ana smiles about what the tournament means. 'This is so much better than seeing them spend a day off on their screens.' She says that the community and the opportunity to play a well-run tournament on an inspiring holiday—it’s a wonderful moment for the students and families. Ana glows happily, holding a container of fresh fruit snacks in her lap, cheering her son on. And feeding him when he stops by to say hi. He needs fuel for the next game. Ana will be there, cheering him on."

Thanks to Principal Jeff Cooks, Athletic Director James Fairley, and many other Sullivan faculty for helping make this year’s tournament a great success. Together, we honored the legacy of Dr. King as we provided the young athletes a meaningful and fun experience!
